Can We Talk Functional??

Talking with a friend about my workout philosophy I tried to explain that I’m about every day functional fitness.  It confused her, as I’d just bragged about Monday’s workout.
“What is there in your life that resembles deadlifting 120#?”
A LOT!  My bad-hipped dog Katy need picking up and lifting into the car.  Katy is about 65#- [...]

Changin’ It Up

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that January was going to be a month of unstable workouts.  Well, I’m scrappin it.  It’s not that I don’t enjoy these -they are whole lot of my favorite workouts.  Rather a couple things coincided to make me change my mind about the focus for the near term.
#1.  My [...]

Braggin’ Be Good

(three posts in a week? I’d like to take this as a sign that my new meds are starting to work. All together now, YAY!)
This is starting as just a little brag, but I’m hoping that as I get the words on the page it grows to something more than just a self-indulgent [...]

Workout Notes

I’ve had a couple great workouts this weekend.  Worked hard, tied a couple personal bests, hit the locker room all sweaty, slept like a dog at night.  Thought I’d share the workouts and some notes.
-20-30 minutes of cardio.  November is my treadmill month (I’m a little sad to see it go); the machine is set [...]

Talking Myself Into Losing Again.

This week I had ‘THAT TALK” with myself.  The talk I’ve known was coming; the talk I’ve been fighting against all year.
You see, back in January when I hit my “target weight” I had worked long and hard to get there.  I had reached a point where the very words “weight loss” or “body fat [...]

The Bear Chasing Me…

Two or three times a week I do interval training for my cardio. It’s killer good for me: gets me nice and sweaty (which was always sign of success when I worked with Guido) and acts like a turbo-boost for my mood. Go in grumpy, unfocused and anxious; come out all sunshine and [...]

Goals for the Week

It’s always easier for me to state my goals out loud and then check back to see if I’ve accomplished what I wanted.  Writing things down is the secret for me.
That said, here’s what I want/need to work on this week:
1. Sunday: balance/stability workout.  steady-rate cardio.
Monday: strength workout and hiit cardio.
Wednesday: workout with Adam.  [...]

Rebuilding Strength

I thought the time I took off to heal my shoulder, then the time I’ve cut back because of a medical issue, wouldn’t have any great effect upon my strength.  (silly me!).
I thought that when it felt like working hard, even though I had cut back on my weight, it was just me being careful.
The [...]

On a (foam) roll

I have a bit of tightness in my right ITB.  It mainly hurts when I kneel (and hit that bit of excess fluid), but I find it annoying.  I’ve had it off and and for years and everyone has always recommended stretching to treat it.  I have trouble stretching this band which frustrated me no-end.  [...]

Missing, but not missing, the Gym

Wow, I wrote this post yesterday.  It completely got lost somewhere.
I went to the gym last Wednesday and did a nice full-body strength workout.  Felt fabulous when I was done; felt fried when I got home.  Hadn’t made it to the gym since til this morning.  That’s five days.
I didn’t miss it.
I had the bag [...]
