Thinking about Food…

I’ve been thinking a lot about food recently.  It’s odd- I have little interest in cooking most evenings, and almost no inspiration for making something for supper.  Yet, at the same time, I’m fascinated with finding healthier foods -and reading about healthier growing and production of foods.
Today I traveled down to the Berkeley to investigate [...]

Talking Vegetables…

And aren’t I always lately?
These peoples’ mothers never taught them not to play with their food.  An inspired performance of the Veggie Orchestra.  All instruments are created from live veggies.

Greens

We all know the importance of eating colorful foods.  Researches regularly tell us that eating the color wheel – bright oranges, deep reds and purples, and ofcourse greens- insures we get all the phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals we need.
In the summer, I will easily eat a salad for lunch most days, getting those greens.  Wintertime, [...]

Concentrating on the nutrients instead of the food

Reading the Gubernatrix’s latest post on diet and the low-fat myth, I was struck by this line:
Dr Rosemary Stanton, points out  (about a new Australian diet) “It encourages this total preoccupation with protein or carbohydrates, with nutrients rather than food.”
In the last few months there have been numerous blogposts and discussions about how eating healthy [...]

Yes, things are becoming clear…

I had a cupcake for breakfast today.
Last night I had my traditional Monday night get-together; there were cupcakes.  I usually plan my week so that my “cheat” will be the dessert on Monday nights (unless it’s ice cream), so I wasn’t bothered.  However, they packed one extra cupcake into a baggie (like an illicit drug.  [...]

Accountable Eating For A Week

When I hit my goal weight back in January (well, maybe my goal weight.  I’ve rethinking this…), one of my promises to myself was to continue to monitor my success by returning to FitDay once a month and write down what I eat for a whole week.
It’s something I’ve done off and on for about [...]

Healthy Eating at a Conference. Possible?

I have returned my annual 4 day love-fest that was BlogHer 08 with the same souvenir I brought home last year. A cold. I’m proclaiming an allergy to too much conditioned air; good think I don’t like in a region where even in my own home I’d have to have conditioned air most [...]

When it comes to dieting, don’t go it alone.

Science Daily reported on a University of Missouri study comparing Weight Watchers to gym membership weight loss programs. While the WW participants lost about 5% body weight, this was mostly comprised of lean muscle mass. The gym participants, in contrast, did not lose much weight, but did lose significant amounts of intra-abdominal fat. [...]

Eating My Way Healthy

It’s 10:30 am and I’m digging into my mid-morning snack as I type this. Curious? It’s a small plate of mixed baby greens, with 5 sliced strawberries and 3 ozs of Oscar Mayer 98% fat free shaved turkey breast. The whole thing is topped with .5 Tbs of extra virgin olive oil [...]

I Am What I Eat.

Food.
Michael Pollan’s oft-quoted line from In Defense of Food is a good place to start. I try to:
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.
It wasn’t that long ago that I wouldn’t make this claim for myself. While I spurned “fast-food nation” except for the occasional visit to KFC, many of my meals [...]
